Velvet and Gloria!

Jonas Gira, horn

His velvety sound has captivated all the ensemble members from the very beginning, and we look forward to many wonderful concert moments together.

Jonas Gira grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at the age of five, before receiving his first horn lessons at the local music school two years later. Before long, he moved to study with Ulrich Köbl in Kempten, who taught him intensively until 2018. At just 16, Jonas was accepted as a junior student into the horn class of Prof. Christian Lampert at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, where he began his regular studies in 2020. In 2022 he continued his training at the Bern University of the Arts, also with Prof. Lampert. He has received important musical inspiration from, among others, Prof. Johannes Hinterholzer, Prof. Luise Neunecker, Prof. Frøydis Ree Wekre and Prof. Carsten Duffin.
Jonas Gira has won numerous competition prizes, including several first prizes at Jugend musiziert, third prize at the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award (2021) and first prize at the 1st International City Brass Competition Stuttgart (2022). He has also twice received a special prize from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. He gained his first orchestral experience at an early age in various youth orchestras and as a member of the orchestra academy of the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker in the 2021/22 season. Since September 2023, Jonas Gira has been principal horn of the SWR Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he appears regularly as guest principal horn with numerous renowned ensembles, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin State Opera, the Munich Philharmonic, the Stuttgart State Opera and the Dresden Philharmonic.
